Severe Weather Plan

Commencement is held outdoors, rain or shine, UNLESS dangerous weather (lightning, thunderstorms, strong winds, heavy rain) is occurring or imminent. If there is a light to moderate rain, the ceremony will remain outside on the Front Quad as planned.

If severe weather conditions are present or are threatening on Sunday morning, a decision to delay Commencement will be made by 9:00 a.m. Commencement may be delayed from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. if it appears the weather threat may be short lived. In that event, email and text messages will be sent to all graduates to alert them of the delay.

If dangerous weather or the potential for it still exists at 11:00 a.m., Commencement will be moved indoors to duPont Chapel. Commencement will be moved indoors ONLY in the event of dangerous weather.

All degree candidates would report to the Botetourt Reading Room and will be lined up in alpha order under the porches of East and Main. Again, email and text messages will be sent to all graduates to alert them of the change and when to report for lining up.

Each degree candidate will be given two guest tickets for their family at the commencement rehearsal on Saturday morning. All others should go to the Theatre, the Niederer Auditorium in the VAC, and Babcock Auditorium for a live transmission.
